Personal

Son of Mexican immigrants. Speaks Spanish. Born and raised in La Feria, Texas. Grew up next door to a convent. Volunteered at a soup kitchen for years.

Worked in farm fields alongside family after school and on weekends. Crops included cilantro, green onion, mustard greens, corn, tomatoes, cantaloupes, and watermelons. Summer job was selling watermelons on the side of the highway and in flea markets.

First college graduate in extended family.
